Leaving Hanoi is always at night. How to get to Sapa…
When you stand on the platform at Hanoi Station, a scent hits you first. The smell of oil, the unfamiliar scent of fabric softener from luggage, and a mixture of the unique tension and excitement of people setting off somewhere. It is not sound, but vibration, that signals the train's departure. Only when the platform slowly begins to recede does the reality sink in that "I am now heading to Sapa.".
I have traveled this road dozens of times. By train, by bus, and with my own hands. From Hanoi to Sapa—the distance is about 320 kilometers. However, what kind of experience those 320 kilometers become depends entirely on which way to get to Sapa you choose.
This article might not be necessary for those who view travel merely as a means to reach a destination. However, for those who feel that travel itself is part of the journey, it is worth reading.

🚂 Train — The Choice of Slow Travelers
The night train runs for about 8 hours from Hanoi Station to Lao Cai Station.
You depart around 10 PM and arrive in Lao Cai early in the morning. From there, you have to take a bus or taxi for more than 40 minutes to reach Sapa. It is not efficient. However, people who choose the train do not come for efficiency.
Lying in a two-person soft sleeper compartment and looking out the window, you can feel the topography of Vietnam even in the darkness. When the flat land disappears and the road begins to curve, that is when you enter the North. It feels less like the train is climbing a mountain and more like the terrain of Northern Vietnam is gradually enveloping the train.
Train Timetable (Hanoi → Lao Cai)
| train | Departure from Hanoi | Arrived at Lao Cai | Operating days |
|---|---|---|---|
| SP1 | 21:35 | 05:15 | Every Friday |
| SP3 | 22:00 | 05:55 | everyday |
| SP7 | 22:40 | 06:25 | everyday |

Train Reservation Tips:
- Reservations are recommended at least 2–3 days in advance (1–2 weeks in advance for weekends and peak season).
- The soft sleeper double room is the most comfortable.
- Reservations available at Baolau.com or 12go.asia
- One-way fare: Approximately $20–$40 (depending on class)
- After arriving in Lao Cai, take the bus to Sapa for about 40 minutes (30,000–50,000 VND).
The biggest downside of the train is that it does not go directly to Sapa. You have to transfer in Lao Cai. You have to get off at dawn and look for a bus while still half-asleep. If you dislike that inconvenience, there is another way.
🚌 Sleeping Bus — Direct from Hanoi to Sapa
Nowadays, there are far more travelers choosing sleeping buses over trains.
It departs around 9 PM and drops you off in the center of Sapa before dawn. There is no need to transfer. The seats are reclining, and it is also air-conditioned. The fare is often cheaper than the train.

Sleeping Bus Tips:
- Depart from Hanoi My Dinh Bus Terminal or Gia Lam Terminal
- Main routes: Hung Thanh, Sapa Express, Hoang Long
- One-way fare: Approximately $15–$25
- Duration: Approximately 5–6 hours (nighttime)
- Arrival in Sapa center — no transfer required
There are downsides as well. Vietnamese buses spare no effort in honking. As the road gets closer to the mountains, there are more curves, which can be a struggle for those prone to motion sickness. Motion sickness medication is essential.
And to be honest, the fatigue from arriving in Sapa by bus is greater than that of the train. The train shakes steadily, but the bus shakes irregularly.
🚗 Rental Car or Personal Vehicle — How the Road Becomes the Destination
There is an option that trains and buses do not have.
Driving yourself from Hanoi to Sapa takes about 5 to 6 hours during the day. You can stop whenever you want and pass by wherever you wish. The road itself becomes the scenery.

In particular, the mountain road section passing through Lao Cai and heading up to Sapa—when driving up those winding roads, directly feeling the river and rice paddies below and the clouds getting closer—is an experience that trains or buses cannot provide. This is because trains and buses mostly travel at night. Only those who have driven that road during the day truly understand that scenery.
However, driving on Vietnamese roads is difficult if you are not used to it. It is common for motorcycles to come speeding from the opposite lane, and curves on mountain roads are sharper than expected.
Tips for using a private vehicle:
- International driving permit required
- It is recommended to familiarize yourself with Vietnamese traffic laws in advance.
- Cost: Rental car approximately $50–$80 per day (depending on the car model)
- Private pickup services with a guide are often more convenient.

My way to Sapa is…
After traveling this path for 10 years, the conclusion I have reached is this.
If you have plenty of time and want to enjoy the journey itself - train. If you want to reach Sapa directly, comfortably and quickly — Sleeping bus. If I want to go freely, at my own pace — Rental car or private vehicle.
And I would like to mention one more thing. If you are a first-time traveler to Sapa, any method is perfectly fine. What matters is not the method, but what you do when you arrive.
“In the end, what matters more than how to get to Sapa is what you do once you arrive.”

Arriving in Sapa before dawn, and deciding what to see and where to go while the fog still blankets the streets—that is the true beginning of a trip to Sapa.
