Departure gate at Noi Bai Airport, two hours before boarding. People stop in front of the coffee stand in the duty-free area. Gold-colored tin cans, bags featuring coconut designs, and gift sets adorned with “100% Robusta” stickers. They pick them up, put them down, pick them up again to check the price, and put them down once more. The anxiety of the airport environment clouds their judgment. The thought that “I have to buy something, anything” compels them to open their wallets.

I bring coffee with me whenever I visit Korea every year. My 10 years of experience can be summarized into a single principle: when it comes to Vietnamese coffee gifts, the taste is determined more by when and where you buy it than by what you purchase. Too often, a product hastily grabbed at the airport costs twice as much and tastes only half as good as one chosen at a local supermarket.
This is the final installment of the coffee series. Part 1 covered the history and types, and Part 2 outlined what to buy and what not to buy. Part 3 is about execution. Where to buy it, how to transport it to Korea, and how to enjoy it at home. Just follow along in order.
Comparison of Where to Buy Vietnamese Coffee Gifts — The Airport Isn't Always the Answer

Airport duty-free shop
There is only one advantage: it is convenient. You can easily carry items in your hand while your purchased goods are still in your suitcase. Other than that, there is little reason to recommend it. Even for the same product, airport duty-free shops are 30 to 501 TP3T more expensive than downtown supermarkets. Even with duty-free benefits, the regular price is set high to begin with.
Nevertheless, if you must buy at the airport: Choose beans sold at the Highlands Coffee or Phúc Long direct-operated cafes. These are the products displayed next to the counter where actual coffee is sold, not on the souvenir stand. At the very least, you can check the roasting date.
VinMart · Big C · Co.opMart
It is the best choice for purchasing Vietnamese coffee gifts at a reasonable price. In Hanoi, Vinmart can be found in the basement of the Lotte Center and at small stores scattered throughout the city. Near Ha Long Bay, Vinmarts located within Big C and Vincom Plaza in Hong Gai are easily accessible.
When buying here, I only check two things: whether the bag has a gas release valve and whether the roasting date (Ngày rang) is printed on it. If these two conditions are met, any brand is at least above average. The Mê Trang, Phúc Long, and Trung Nguyên Legend bean lines are options that can be easily found in supermarkets.
Trung Nguyên Legend Café
They are located in the centers of major cities, such as Hanoi's Old Quarter and Le Loi Street in Ho Chi Minh City. At their directly managed stores, you can choose from a wide variety of options, ranging from single-origin beans to blends, and ask staff about the roasting date and grind size. Gift packaging is also available. If you have the time, it is the most trustworthy place to shop.
Selection criteria by situation
- Solo traveler, for personal use: 200~500g of supermarket coffee beans
- Gift for multiple people: Multiple small packages of Trung Nguyen Direct Store Blend
- No time: Coffee bean corner next to the counter at Phúc Long Cafe in the airport
- Gift a pin filter as well: Supermarket household goods section or airport souvenir shop (30,000–80,000 VND)
Importing into Korea — Customs and Quarantine: All You Need to Know
Coffee is a processed food. Processed foods intended for personal consumption can be brought into Korea without a separate declaration to customs. There are no quantity limits either. However, since customs officers may verify whether the purchase is for commercial purposes if they deem the quantity excessive, it is advisable to keep the amount within the scope of a personal gift.
Ground coffee vs. whole beans
Both forms are permitted. They are not subject to animal or plant quarantine. However, they must be completely sealed. If the product was tied in a plastic bag locally, it is recommended to reseal it in a zip-lock bag or transfer it to an airtight container before entering Korea. Customs may request that you open the bag if the coffee has a strong aroma.
Bringing in condensed milk (Ong Tho, Longevity, etc.)
Strictly speaking, as it is a processed dairy product, it may be subject to quarantine. However, in practice, fully sealed commercial canned products generally pass through without issues. Nevertheless, it is recommended to check the specific criteria on the Korea Customs Service website (www.customs.go.kr) or with the Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency.
Phin filter carry-on
Although it is a metal tool, it is not a liquid or a sharp blade, so it can be placed in carry-on baggage. Due to its small size, it usually passes through security checkpoints without separate inspection. Of course, it is also permitted in checked baggage.

From Vietnam to Korea — Storage and Transport
Local storage
Coffee is sensitive to light, heat, and humidity. The weather in Vietnam is hot and humid. Even when storing it in a hotel room for a few days after purchase, keep it in a cool, air-conditioned place and avoid direct sunlight. If you bought whole beans, keep the bag sealed. If the bag has been opened, place it in a zip-lock bag and remove as much air as possible.
Carry-on vs. Checked Baggage
Whole beans or ground coffee can be placed in either carry-on or checked baggage. However, if weight limits apply, checking is preferable. The impact of changes in cabin pressure is minimal. Placing pin filters in carry-on baggage reduces the risk of loss.
When packing coffee in checked baggage, it is recommended to wrap the bag in clothing to prevent it from bursting or being crushed. If the bag has a gas release valve, it may inflate due to pressure differences, which is normal and will not burst.
Storage after arrival in Korea
Coffee beans roasted within two weeks taste best when stored in an airtight container at room temperature and consumed within two to three weeks. If long-term storage is required, freezing is possible. However, after removing frozen beans, they must be left at room temperature for at least 30 minutes to prevent condensation before grinding. Do not refreeze beans that have been frozen and thawed once.
How to Use a Phin Filter — The Basics of Vietnamese Drip Coffee

A pin filter consists of four parts. From the bottom, it rests over the glass. pedestal, holding coffee Chamber, pressing the coffee Internal filter (press), covering during extraction lid. The structure is simple, but the order and timing make all the difference in taste.
Basic Recipe (1 serving)
- Place the pin holder on top of the glass.
- Put 15~20g of coarsely ground coffee into the body.
- Press the inner filter to tamp the coffee evenly.
- Pour 30ml of water around 95°C and let it steep for 30 seconds (blooming)
- Slowly pour the remaining 90~100ml of water.
- Cover with a lid and wait 4 to 5 minutes.
- It is finished when the concentrated liquid collects in the glass.
Common Mistakes and Responses
- If water is dripping too quickly: Press the inner filter a little more to compact the coffee.
- If no water is dripping at all: The coffee was compacted too tightly or ground too finely. Lift out the filter and gently loosen the coffee.
- If the taste is too weak: Increase the amount of coffee or raise the water temperature. Strong extraction is the standard for Vietnamese coffee.
Local purchase location
Household goods corner on the first floor of Dong Xuan Market in Hanoi, kitchenware corners at VinMart and Big C, and souvenir shops at the airport. Stainless steel products are more durable than aluminum. Prices range from 30,000 to 80,000 VND.
Making Ca Phe Sua Da at Home
Cà phê sữa đá is Vietnamese iced condensed milk coffee. Translated, it means "iced milk coffee." The name is simple, but the experience of drinking a cup of this in the midday heat of Hanoi is anything but simple. There are two ways to recreate it at home.
The classic recipe for making drip coffee
- Pour 20–30ml of condensed milk (Ong Tho or Longevity brand) into a glass first.
- Extract 80–100ml of concentrated extract according to the pin recipe above.
- Slowly pour the concentrate over the condensed milk and mix well.
- Transfer the star filled with ice into a glass.
Adjusting the ratio: Reducing the condensed milk makes the taste more bitter, while increasing it makes it sweeter. Start with 25ml of condensed milk and adjust to your preference.
Simply recreate with a G7 mix
G7 3-in-1 instant coffee mix (coffee + sugar + creamer) can be found at Vietnamese grocery stores in Korea or on Coupang. Dissolve one packet of G7 in 100ml of hot water, then add an additional 10–15ml of condensed milk to get a taste closer to the authentic Vietnamese flavor. Pour it into a glass filled with ice to make Ca Phe Sua Da.
Ong Tho or Longevity brands of condensed milk are much richer and sweeter than those sold in Korean supermarkets. They are easily available at Korean online stores.
Wrapping up the Vietnam Coffee Series
Over the course of three parts, I have summarized the history of Vietnamese coffee, what to buy, and how to take it home to drink. From the moment a bag of coffee enters your bag to the moment you place a phin dripper in your living room, knowing this process will help Vietnam linger a little longer even after your trip ends.
