Hoan Kiem Lake at 5 a.m. looks different from tourist photos. Fog settles low over the water's surface, and streetlights spread across the water. There are people walking briskly around the perimeter. Dressed in sportswear, wearing earphones, and holding water bottles in their hands. They are not tourists. They are citizens of Hanoi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I have stood here at this time many times. The first time was by chance. I passed by the lake while out trying to catch an early flight, and since that day, I have made a point of coming out early. I wanted to see how this city begins its day. If you are preparing for a trip to Hanoi, experiencing this dawn just once will change your understanding of the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hoan Kiem Lake is located in the heart of Hanoi's Old Quarter. It is an essential stop on any tourist itinerary and is overflowing with people during the day. However, if you leave after seeing only that scene, you have missed half of the lake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Who is around Hanoi's Hoan Kiem Lake at 5 AM?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The circumference of Hoan Kiem Lake is approximately 1.8 kilometers. At 5 a.m., this area transforms into a living space for the citizens of Hanoi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is a group playing badminton. Without a net, they face each other and exchange the shuttlecock. Next to them, elderly women are slowly repeating Tai Chi movements. A little further on, I see a group doing aerobics to music playing from a Bluetooth speaker. There is also a man sitting silently with a fishing rod cast out. I don't know if he actually intends to catch fish or if he just wanted to sit there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To these people, the lake is not a park, but a living room. Just as one starts the morning in a living room, they begin their day around this lake. They did not come out without a special purpose. These are people who come to this spot at this time every day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why this time? Daytime temperatures in Hanoi exceed 35 degrees in the summer. Exercise must be done before sunrise. And the path around this lake is the most pedestrian-friendly in the heart of the city, with the best air and no traffic. This dawn is not on any tourist itinerary. That is why only the residents of this city are here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How the Turtle Legend Still Lives<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Ho\u00e0n Ki\u1ebfm means \u201cthe returned sword.\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the early 15th century, Vietnam was under the rule of the Ming Dynasty. A general named L\u00ea L\u1ee3i led a resistance, and according to legend, he obtained a divine sword from a lake. Using that sword, he drove out the Ming Dynasty after a ten-year struggle and ascended to the throne as emperor. After achieving unification and becoming emperor, L\u00ea L\u1ee3i was touring the lake by boat when a golden turtle rose to the surface, retrieved the sword, and disappeared. Since then, the lake has been named Hoan Kiem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The legend does not end here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is a small island in the lake. On that island is the Ngoc Son Temple. Inside the temple, which is accessed by crossing the red The Huc Bridge, two turtles are enshrined in glass cases. One is a taxidermied turtle found dead in the lake in 1967, weighing 200 kilograms and measuring 1.9 meters in length. An information board reads, "An individual over 500 years old.".<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The other is C\u1ee5 R\u00f9a (Great Ancestor Turtle). On January 19, 2016, the last surviving turtle in Hoan Kiem Lake died. A team of experts from Vietnam and Germany carried out plastination (resin injection preservation), and it began to be exhibited inside the temple in March 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The legendary turtle is now inside a glass case. However, the strange thing is that people entering the shrine still fall silent. Tourists are no exception. Even while taking photos, they pause briefly in front of the case. It seems as though the legend is not trapped inside the glass case, but rather that the glass case has become a device that keeps the legend alive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The alleys around the lake change like this in a day.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Hoan Kiem shows four different faces throughout the day. It is the same place, but depending on what time you stand there, it feels like a completely different space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From 5 to 7 AM is the time for citizens. It is the time for the people exercising mentioned earlier. There are no tourists during this time. Even if there are, they are not noticeable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From 8 a.m., cafes and students start coming in. Cafes in the alleys near the lake begin to set up tables, and students riding bicycles down from the direction of Hanoi University can be seen. A X\u00f4i X\u00e9o (golden sticky rice) stall stands on the street corner, and office workers eat breakfast standing up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tourists are at their peak in the afternoon. Tour buses stop, and guides walk at a steady pace holding flags. A line forms in front of The Hug Bridge to take photos. Anyone seeing this lake for the first time at this time will remember it as a tourist attraction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My favorite time is after 6 PM. Hanoi citizens come out with their families. Children run around, and street food stalls emit smoke. The illuminated The Huc Bridge is reflected in the water, and the outlines of the temples stand out in the darkness. At this time, tourists and locals mingle, but the atmosphere is completely different from the daytime. The day is for sightseeing, while the evening is for living.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On package tour itineraries, Hoan Kiem is usually listed as follows: \u201cHoan Kiem Lake viewing and free time (30 minutes).\u201d The bus stops, the guide points out good angles for photos, we take a group photo in front of The Huc Bridge, and then get back on the bus. If there is anything I saw, it was the surface of the lake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Experiencing this lake from a local perspective is a whole different story. For instance, if you go into \u0110inh Li\u1ec7t Alley on the north side of the lake, there is an old egg coffee shop. If you sit by the window on the second floor at 9 a.m., you can see motorcycles and people coming and going toward the lake below. This alley is not listed on the menus of tourist spots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or, if it is Friday evening, the pedestrian zone around the lake opens. Vehicles are restricted, and people pour into the streets. Street performances take place, and a procession of bicycles, appearing out of nowhere, circles the lake. This scene does not occur on weekdays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tourist attractions have a set way of appreciating them. You buy a ticket, take a photo, and leave. Hoan Kiem is not that kind of place. There are no tickets, and no set time to leave. It is a place where Hanoi residents come out every morning to exercise, children run around after school, and the elderly set up their boards of Go. This lake is like the pulse of the city of Hanoi. The legendary turtle is inside a glass case. But as long as there are people who stop before it, the legend lives on. As long as there are citizens walking around this lake at dawn, this city lives. Hoan Kiem is a place where the past and the present float on the same water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
