I checked my phone and saw news of the VinSpeed groundbreaking posted in various places. On April 12, 2026, the Hanoi-Quang Ninh high-speed railway broke ground today. It is the day the era began where a trip from Hanoi to Ha Long Bay takes just 23 minutes.

When I first came to Ha Long Bay 10 years ago, it took five hours by bus from Hanoi. Even now, it takes two and a half hours by the fastest route. The fact that it will become 23 minutes does not simply mean that travel has become easier. When accessibility changes to any travel destination, its entire character changes. I wanted to start documenting, starting now, how that change will occur.

Routes and Schedule — Confirmed Figures Only

The details confirmed based on the announcement of the commencement of construction are as follows.

Start dateApril 12, 2026

Maximum design speed: 350km/h

Hanoi ↔ Ha Long Travel Time: 23 minutes

route: Co Loa Station (Hanoi) → Gia Vinh (Bac Ninh) → Ninh Sa (Haiphong) → Yen Tu (Quang Ninh) → Ha Long Station (Inside Vinhomes Global Gate)

Completion target: 2028

Co Loa Station is located in the northeast of Hanoi. The terminal station, Ha Long Station, is being constructed within the Vinhomes Global Gate site. These two points are significant, as they imply that large-scale development is proceeding simultaneously in both Hanoi and Ha Long Bay, centered around the newly established station areas.

Specific stop methods and fare systems for the transit sections of Ja Vinh (Bac Ninh), Ninh Sa (Hai Phong), and Yen Tu (Quang Ninh) have only been mentioned based on the announced plans, and confirmed figures have not yet been disclosed. This will be updated as soon as an official announcement is made.

How Ha Long Bay travel patterns are changing

Currently, the biggest barrier to entry for a trip to Ha Long Bay is travel time. Since it takes half a day to arrive from Hanoi, most travelers choose a cruise package of at least two days and one night. Naturally, this leads to a desire to stay longer in return for the time invested.

Once the high-speed rail is completed, this structure will change. With a 23-minute journey from Hanoi, a day trip to Ha Long Bay becomes a sufficiently realistic option. Just as day travel between cities via Shinkansen or TGV is common in Europe or Japan, the same travel pattern could emerge in Northern Vietnam.

It is not simple to say whether this is unconditionally good news for travelers. If day trips become more popular, the duration of stay in Ha Long Bay could shorten. The cruise market will be restructured. On the other hand, if accessibility is lowered, more people may visit Ha Long Bay, and some of them may actually stay longer. We will have to wait until after 2028 to see which direction the tides will turn.

What is clear is that once travel becomes easier, the quality of the trip is ultimately determined by what the person does in Ha Long Bay.

If you don't have a Ha Long Bay travel itinerary yet, Tour InquiryConsultations are available. If you are planning a trip to Ha Long Bay right now, the first thing you should do is find out about the current transportation methods.

Currently, there are three main ways to get from Hanoi to Ha Long Bay.

express busThis is the most popular way to travel to Bãi Cháy from Hanoi My Dinh Terminal or a designated pickup point. The journey takes between 2 hours and 30 minutes and 3 hours, depending on traffic conditions.

limousine busThe seats are wider than those on express buses, and the schedule is generally punctual. Although the price is slightly higher, it is a worthwhile option if you want to reduce fatigue from long-distance travel.

seaplaneIt is the fastest at about 45 minutes, but the cost is substantial. Since the view of Ha Long Bay from the sky is a unique experience, some travelers consider taking a one-way ticket if they have time in their schedule.

If you are preparing for a trip to Northern Vietnam for the first time Northern Vietnam Travel GuideIt is recommended to first understand the regional transportation methods and travel flow before coming.

What the Groundbreaking Tells Us — Context Seen on the Ground

There is a broader context behind the groundbreaking of Vinspeed today, beyond just the construction schedule.

The Vietnamese government has designated the period from 2025 to 2030 as a time for intensive infrastructure investment. The expansion of high-speed railways and expressways, as well as the construction of new airports, are being pursued simultaneously. Riding this wave, VinGroup is simultaneously carrying out a mixed-use development called Vinhomes Global Gate near Ha Long Bay. The fact that a high-speed railway terminal is being built within the site clearly indicates an intention to secure a prime location near the station.

Having lived in Vietnam for 10 years, I have witnessed the city of Ha Long Bay change on several occasions: when the cruise ship docks were renovated, when the Vinpearl Resort was built, and when the tourism infrastructure was systematized. Each time, the traveler's experience of Ha Long Bay changed. The current groundbreaking has the potential to be the most significant change yet.

With the 10-Year Residency Guide → Ha Long Bay Private Tour Inquiry

In the next part, after the high-speed rail A summary of how travel methods from Hanoi to Ha Long Bay differ.do.

The author resides in Ha Long Bay and works as a tour guide, operates a travel agency, and engages in local investment.
